Downlisted from CR to EN in 2018 after habituation-based tourism funded ranger protection. Still endangered. Still the best great-ape recovery story we have.
When local people are paid to keep a forest standing, the forest tends to stand.
Threats
- Disease from humans
- Habitat pressure
- Instability in the region
What you can do
- Choose high-standard gorilla tourism
Permits fund the rangers. Bargain tours do not.
