From 62 mature animals in 2001 to more than 2,000 today. IUCN downlisted it from Endangered to Vulnerable in June 2024 — one of the clearest large-carnivore recoveries on record.

The grade is not destiny. Captive breeding, rabbit recovery, and reintroductions moved a cat off the brink in one generation.
